Have You Considered? Your Love For God and Jesus Christ

Saints of the Restoration
“Have You Considered?”
Published April 19th, 2008

What does it mean to love someone?  Most people would agree that love means more than just saying “I Love You”.  Love can mean many things, but in its purest form, love means that you put the needs of another before your own.

Many Christians proclaim that they love God or Jesus Christ.  This love may be based on the faith in which they believe or a specific blessing that they were profoundly moved by.  But have you considered what it means to put the “needs” of God or Jesus Christ before your own?

In the book of John, Jesus told his disciples: “If you love me, keep my commandments.”  In similar fashion John the Beloved wrote the members of the church that:  “this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments; and his commandments are not grievous.”

Thus, the scriptures give us a standard, a pattern, whereby we can determine whether we truly love God and Jesus.  Based on this standard we cannot claim we love God and Jesus if we don’t study the scriptures to learn of their commandments and strive to keep those commandments.

The apostle Paul wrote Timothy:  “Study to show thyself approved unto God” and “all scripture given by inspiration of God is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

Based on the scriptures, for our claim of love of God and Jesus to be true, we must:

  • Humble ourselves and pray to God in the name of Jesus Christ for the correct understanding of the scriptures
  • Study the scriptures to learn the commandments of God and Jesus
  • Be obedient to the commandments through our works of righteousness such as faith, repentance, baptisms, and teaching the true gospel

To do less will make any claim that we love God and Jesus false and jeopardize our hope of salvation.

At the Church of Jesus Christ Zion’s Branch, we seek to understand and keep the commandments of God and Jesus, endeavoring in our daily walk to stand fast in one spirit, with one mind, striving together for the faith of the true, uncompromised gospel.  If you have similar desires, we invite you to attend our services at Zion’s Branch.
